Ring Doorbell Installation in McKinney, TX

McKinney is our home market. We do Ring doorbell installation in McKinney most weeks of the year, in every part of town from the 1850s houses near the square to the brand new streets in Painted Tree.

This page covers what makes a McKinney install easy, what makes one tricky, and what we check before we drill a single hole.

Most McKinney homes are already wired for this

The typical McKinney home was built in 2007. That is the median year built for housing here, per the Census Bureau's 2019 to 2023 American Community Survey.

That one number tells you most of what you need to know. About 88 percent of McKinney's housing went up in 1990 or later. Homes from that era were built with a doorbell button, a chime box inside, and a small transformer feeding both.

So in most McKinney houses, a Ring doorbell is a wired swap. No battery to charge every few weeks.

What we still check first

  • Transformer voltage. Ring's Pro models need 16 to 24 volts AC. Some older transformers put out less than that.
  • Whether the existing chime is mechanical or digital. It changes which parts we bring.
  • Whether the wire is still live. A dead doorbell button that nobody has used in years is common.
  • Door frame material. Brick, stone and stucco all get a different anchor.

Downtown McKinney is a different job

The homes around the square are not part of that 2007 median. Chestnut Square Historic Village has buildings dating to the 1850s. The Old Collin County Courthouse went up in 1874.

The city has four historic districts: the Commercial Historic District, the Cotton Mill Historic District, the Residential Historic District, and the Residential and Commercial Historic District.

If your home sits in one of them, the city's Historic Preservation Office reviews changes to the outside of your property. Their published list covers windows, siding, exterior doors, shutters, porches and railings.

Straight answer on historic districts

The city's own guidance does not name doorbells or cameras either way. If your house is in a McKinney historic district, call the Historic Preservation Office at 972-547-2000 before we mount anything on the front. We will still do the install, we just want you clear with the city first.

Older homes near the square also tend to have older wiring. Sometimes there is no transformer at all. Sometimes there is one, and it was sized for a chime in 1962. On those jobs we usually talk through a battery model or a transformer upgrade.

What we run into in McKinney's biggest neighborhoods

Stonebridge Ranch

Stonebridge Ranch covers thousands of acres and more than 9,400 homes across 70 plus villages. One master association runs it, the Stonebridge Ranch Community Association.

The association asks homeowners to submit a modification application before certain outside changes. Their published guidelines do not call out doorbells specifically. A doorbell that replaces an existing one in the same spot is rarely an issue. A separate wall-mounted camera or a floodlight cam is more likely to need a form.

Craig Ranch

Craig Ranch runs about 2,200 acres just north of the Sam Rayburn Tollway, with its own association and a mix of houses, townhomes and apartments. Renters here usually want a battery model that comes off the wall clean at move-out.

Trinity Falls

Trinity Falls is a 2,000 acre community on the north side with more than 5,200 homes planned. It sits inside two municipal utility districts, and the master association runs around 1,200 dollars a year. Homes here are new, so wiring is almost always in place and in spec.

Painted Tree, Highland Lakes and the newest streets

Painted Tree put its first homes on the ground in 2022, north of University Drive near Lake Forest. Highland Lakes and Aster Park are still filling in. These are the easiest installs we do. The transformer is new, the chime is new, and the wire is where it should be.

McKinney pulled 2,310 single family permits in 2024, the most since 2017.

Ring doorbell installation in McKinney: what the visit looks like

DFW RingPro technician mounting a Ring video doorbell on a brick door frame at a McKinney home
  1. 1We find and test your transformer. It is usually in the attic, near the chime, or at the panel.
  2. 2We pull the old button and check the wire.
  3. 3We mount the Ring at the right height and angle for your porch.
  4. 4We connect it to your WiFi and test the range from the door, not from the router.
  5. 5We set up motion zones so the street and your neighbor's driveway stop triggering alerts.
  6. 6We walk you through the app before we leave. Live view, two-way talk, shared users, the whole thing.

One flat install fee covers the labor. We do not charge per device. If you add a second camera while we are there, the labor does not double.

Package theft on McKinney porches

In June 2021 the McKinney Police Department went looking for a serial package thief caught on video. The thefts were on porches south of Eldorado Parkway between Ridge Road and Lake Forest Drive, and near Stacy Road and Collin McKinney Parkway.

The department asked residents in those areas to send in their security camera footage. That is the part worth noticing. The cameras did not stop the thefts. They gave detectives something to work with.

Texas has had a specific mail theft law since September 2019. Taking mail or packages from someone's porch is a Class A misdemeanor at a small number of addresses, and climbs to a felony from there. Penalties go up a level if the person knew the victim was elderly or disabled.

A doorbell camera does not guarantee nobody takes a box off your porch. It gives you a clear face, a timestamp, and something to hand the police.

Renting in McKinney?

About 36 percent of McKinney households rent. Craig Ranch, the corridors along US 75, and the newer complexes near Collin McKinney Parkway all have a lot of renters.

A battery Ring doorbell works fine here. It mounts to the door frame or a bracket without cutting into anything, and it comes off in about two minutes when you move.

Read what happens to your Ring doorbell when you move out before you install anything in a rental.

Questions we get from McKinney customers

My house is in Stonebridge Ranch. Do I need HOA approval for a Ring doorbell?

The Stonebridge Ranch Community Association's guidelines do not name doorbells. A doorbell that replaces your existing one in the same location is not usually treated as an exterior modification. A separate camera or floodlight cam on a wall is more likely to need a modification application. Check with the association first if you are adding anything beyond the doorbell itself. Texas law also limits how far an association can go: state property code says an association cannot flatly ban an owner from putting a security camera on their own property.

We just closed on a house in Trinity Falls. Is it already wired?

Almost certainly yes. Trinity Falls homes are new construction, so the transformer, chime and doorbell wire are all in place and in spec for a wired Ring. Those installs usually take us under an hour.

Our house is near the square and was built in the 1930s. Can you still do it?

Yes. Older homes downtown are a bigger part of our week than people expect. Sometimes the existing transformer is too small for a Ring Pro and we upgrade it. Sometimes there is no working wire and a battery model is the better call. We tell you which one you are looking at before we start, not after. If your home is inside one of McKinney's four historic districts, check with the city's Historic Preservation Office about exterior changes first.

Do you cover the parts of McKinney that are in Frisco ISD or Prosper ISD?

Yes. McKinney's school zoning is split across several districts, including McKinney ISD, Frisco ISD, Prosper ISD, Allen ISD, Lovejoy ISD and Melissa ISD. Emerson High School is a Frisco ISD campus that physically sits in McKinney. None of that changes our service area. If the address is in McKinney, we come.

How far out do you book in McKinney?

Usually within the same week. McKinney is where most of our installers live, so it is the market where we have the most open slots.
