Ring Doorbell Installation in Plano, TX

Plano is where we do the most transformer work of any city we serve. Ring doorbell installation in Plano is rarely about running new wire. It is about whether the wire that is already there can carry the doorbell you bought.

Here is why that is a Plano problem specifically, and what we do about it.

Plano's housing boom happened early, and it shows

Plano had 17,872 people in 1970. By 1990 it had 128,713. That is a sevenfold jump in twenty years, and the houses went up to match.

The Census numbers line up with that story. About 64 percent of Plano's housing units were built between 1970 and 1999. The median Plano home dates to 1993. Nearly 40 percent of the housing stock is older than 1990.

Those homes almost all have a doorbell button, a chime and a transformer. That part is good news. The catch is what the transformer puts out.

The 16 volt problem

Ring publishes power requirements by model. Battery doorbells run on 8 to 24 volts AC. The Video Doorbell Wired needs 10 to 24 volts. The Pro line and the 2K and 4K wired models need 16 to 24 volts AC and 10 to 40 VA.

A transformer installed in 1981 to ring a metal chime does not have to hit 16 volts. Plenty of them put out 8 or 10.

When that happens, the doorbell often works at first and then acts strange. Ring's own troubleshooting lists the signs: the device drops offline at night, package detection cannot be turned on, or the old chime hums and buzzes on its own.

What we do about it

We test the transformer before we sell you a story. If it is under spec, the fix is a transformer swap, not a new doorbell. It is a small part and it is included in the same flat labor fee. Read more in what happens when your Ring doorbell loses power.

The neighborhood tells us the answer before we arrive

Plano is laid out on a one mile grid, with lower density housing inside each square and the busy stuff pushed out to the intersections. That layout means neighborhoods here were built in clean blocks of time, so the address tells us a lot.

East and central Plano, roughly 1976 to 1996

  • Los Rios, built 1976 to 1984
  • Whiffletree, built 1977 to 1982
  • Hunters Glen, built 1976 to 1996, between US 75 and the Dallas North Tollway
  • Pitman Creek Estates, a 1970s and 80s pocket

These are the addresses where we plan on checking voltage first. Sometimes the transformer is fine. Often it is not.

West and north Plano, roughly 1986 to 2021

  • Deerfield, built 1986 to 2010, 733 single family homes
  • Chase Oaks, built 1989 to 2005
  • Willow Bend, built 1991 to 2002, around 1,700 homes
  • Shoal Creek, built 1995 to 2004
  • Kings Ridge, built 2000 to 2015
  • Normandy Estates, built 2008 to 2021

Newer west Plano homes are usually a straight swap. The transformer is modern, the chime is digital, and we are in and out.

Ring doorbell installation in Plano, step by step

  1. 1We locate the transformer. In Plano homes it is usually in the attic, in the garage, or bolted to the side of the electrical panel.
  2. 2We measure the actual voltage under load, not the number printed on the label.
  3. 3If it is under spec for your model, we swap it. If it is fine, we leave it alone.
  4. 4We mount the doorbell, aim it, and set the motion zones so Park Boulevard traffic stops setting it off.
  5. 5We test the WiFi signal at the door and tell you honestly if it is weak.
  6. 6We set up the app with you before we leave.

One flat labor fee. Adding a second camera on the same visit does not double the labor.

Register your camera with Plano Police

The Plano Police Department runs a Community Camera Program. You register your camera's location at keepplanosafe.org. It takes about a minute.

Police do not get access to your camera. In the department's own words, if a crime happens in your area, an officer may contact you and ask whether you are willing to share footage. That is the whole thing.

We will walk you through the registration on the day of your install if you want it. It is free and it is optional.

About Plano crime numbers

We are not going to scare you with numbers that are not true. Plano's own year end report shows larceny down from 3,804 in 2019 to 2,974 in 2025, and residential burglary down from 361 to 177 over the same stretch.

Plano is getting safer, not more dangerous. People still buy doorbell cameras here, mostly to see deliveries, talk to couriers, and keep an eye on the front door from work.

Apartments and rentals in Plano

Around 43 percent of Plano households rent, and 14 percent of all housing units sit in buildings with 50 or more units. That is a lot of apartments for a suburb.

The heaviest concentrations are in the Legacy West area along the Dallas North Tollway, and around Downtown Plano near the DART Red Line station. The city's own land use inventory shows the Park and Preston area as entirely multifamily.

For apartments we default to a battery model on a no-drill mount. Nothing gets cut, and it comes off clean. Start with the best Ring doorbell setup for apartments.

HOAs and neighborhood groups in Plano

Plano registers HOAs and neighborhood associations through its BEST Neighborhoods Division. BEST stands for Beautiful, Engaged, Safe and Thriving.

Plenty of Plano neighborhoods have real associations. Deerfield has one covering its 733 homes. Willow Bend is unusual: it is made up of several neighborhoods, and each one has its own association.

Doorbells almost never come up in Plano architectural rules. A wall-mounted camera or floodlight can. Ask your association if you are adding one of those. More on that in Ring doorbell rules for HOAs in DFW communities.

Where we work in Plano

  • East Plano: Los Rios, Whiffletree, Chase Oaks and the neighborhoods off Jupiter Road and 15th Street
  • Central Plano: Hunters Glen, Pitman Creek and the Park Boulevard corridor
  • West Plano: Willow Bend, Deerfield, Shoal Creek, Kings Ridge and Normandy Estates
  • North Plano: Legacy West, the Communications Parkway area and everything off Hedgcoxe and Spring Creek Parkway
  • Downtown Plano and the DART Red Line corridor

Plano's school zoning crosses four districts: Plano ISD, Frisco ISD, Lewisville ISD and Allen ISD. That does not change our service area at all.

Questions we get from Plano customers

My house in Los Rios is from 1979. Will a Ring Pro even work?

Usually yes, but check the transformer first. Ring's Pro models need 16 to 24 volts AC. A transformer from the late 1970s may be putting out 8 or 10 volts. If it is under spec, we replace it during the same visit and it is covered by the same flat labor fee. If you want to skip the whole question, a battery model runs on a lower range and does not care what the transformer does.

Why does my old chime buzz after installing a doorbell camera?

That is a classic sign of a power mismatch, and Ring lists it in their own troubleshooting. A mechanical chime that hums, buzzes or rings on its own is almost always a transformer or chime kit issue, not a broken doorbell. It comes up often in Plano's 1970s and 80s homes.

Do I have to register my camera with Plano Police?

No. The Community Camera Program at keepplanosafe.org is completely voluntary, and the department does not get access to your camera. Registering just tells them a camera exists at your address so a detective can ask you for footage if something happens nearby. We are happy to set it up with you.

I rent an apartment near Legacy West. Can you install there?

Yes. We use a battery model on a no-drill mount for apartments, so nothing is cut into the frame and the whole thing comes off in a couple of minutes when your lease ends. Check your lease language first, and read our post on installing a doorbell without violating your lease.

Do you cover the part of Plano that is in Denton County?

Yes. Far west Plano crosses into Denton County and into Lewisville ISD territory. Same service, same pricing, same flat labor fee.
